Thompson gives practically anybody attending Skidmore a mental image of a middle-aged journalist, streaking through the desert with his Samoan attorney, fueled by alcohol and a galaxy of psychotropic drugs, prattling off prophetical passages that would later be recognized as some of the greatest writing of the late 20th century.
