German Mixologist Wolfgang Mayer Wins European Leg Of Cocktail Challenge

Angostura brought the carnival spirit to London when they held the European Finals of the International Angostura Cocktail Challenge at UK RumFest 2010. German mixologist Wolfgang Mayer took the European crown, and goes through to the grand finale taking place during Trinidad’s famous carnival, in March 2011. Brian Woods, Angostura’s Senior Marketing Manager was delighted that the event took place at RumFest. “RumFest is now an integral part of the drinks calendar in Europe and, while it is held in London, it is a truly International event. The interest from the visitors to the event in our Cocktail Challenge made it a memorable experience for all our competitors. It’s not often that bartenders get to make drinks while being cheered on by several hundred knowledgeable people”.

The competition saw twelve finalists vying for the European title following months of regional and national competitions. Mixologists from countries including Spain, Italy, Russia, Germany and the UK created two cocktails, each judged on cocktail taste, appearance, aroma and overall presentation.

Judges for the European final included 2008’s winner Jamie Stephenson, Imbibe Bar & Spirits Editor Alice Lascelles and Angostura’s manager Corporate Communications, Giselle Laronde-West.

Giselle announced the Cocktail Challenge winner at the Golden Barrel Awards and comments: ‘The standard this year has been extremely high so it was very difficult to choose a winner. However both of Wolfgang’s cocktails really were incredible and the mix of ingredients worked perfectly. His cocktail ‘Seven Senses’ stood out though, due to its freshness, originality, balance and aftertaste, whilst Wolfgang’s presentation skills were professional, confident and creative.’ Mayer was delighted and surprised to win the European heat saying “It is an incredible feeling to win, especially with the standard of competitors involved. It was great spending time with so many world class bartenders from all over Europe and to share cocktail ideas with them. To have won when the competition was so fierce is a great achievement for me”.

As European winner, Wolfgang will now face winners from North America, South America, the Caribbean, Asia, Australia, Africa, Trinidad & Tobago and India. The overall winner of the Global Competition wins a cash prize of $10,000 US and a year-long contract as the global Angostura brand ambassador. When asked for his thoughts on the global final, Mayer was keen to play down his chances. “It will be a great experience to visit Trinidad & Tobago for the first time. Winning the overall final will be really tough but I will be preparing hard for the competition and will do my very best to make Europe proud. Most of all, I will relax and just try and enjoy the whole experience”.

CARIBBEAN COCKTAILS INSPIRED BY THE NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL

With Europe's biggest street festival just around the corner (Aug 29–30) it’s time to embrace the Caribbean way of life. To get the party in full swing why not try some laid back summer drinks made with Brugal, the Dominican Republic’s number one selling rum.

For a cocktail that is sophisticated yet simple why not try out the locally inspired “Nutty Notting Hill”. Fill a glass with ice cubes and squeeze in a wedge of fresh lime. Add one shot of Brugal Añejo Golden Rum, half a shot of Amaretto and top with lemonade – the perfect drink to enjoy in the sun after the carnival parade!

Just as vibrant as the costumes on show on the streets of Notting Hill, the ‘Caribbean Passion’ is the ideal summer cocktail to impress your friends.
Add four leaves of fresh mint, one shot Brugal Añejo Golden Rum, one shot Passion Fruit Liqueur, one shot pressed apple juice, one shot cranberry juice and a wedge of freshly squeezed lime into a clean, empty tall glass. Half fill the glass with crushed ice then churn vigorously for ten seconds to infuse flavours before topping up with crushed ice and garnishing with an apple wedge and a fresh sprig of mint.

Brugal is the only rum distilled, matured and bottled in the Dominican Republic, and has become part of the island’s heritage. All the ingredients are actively sourced from local farms maintaining Brugal’s island provenance. The Brugal family has managed the brand for five generations, and this tradition continues today, currently headed up by Franklin Brugal.

Two expressions of this world famous rum have been launched the UK - Brugal Aňejo Golden Rum (RRP £18.49) and Brugal Extra Viejo Golden Rum (RRP £22.75). Both are available online at www.mixxit.co.uk and throughout select style bars nationwide.

The Rum Experience, back in print

Originally published in 2001, "The Rum Experience" quickly became an industry reference. The book includes almost 500 different rums from 46 different countries, 143 distillers/blenders and features 231 rum cocktail recipes!

"Keeping up with the book-selling business started to affect our rum-consulting practice," said author Luis Ayala. "It became an easy decision to stop publishing while we focused on the most pressing aspect of our practice," he added.

The number of inquiries and requests for additional copies of the book finally was too much to resist and, after being out of print for the past 4 years, The Rum Experience, Collector's Edition is finally back, with work already underway for an updated and enhanced 2nd Edition.

Reinvesting in U.S. Territories, Not Foreign Corporations Act

PRIDCO Executive Director's letter to Sen. Baucus regarding cap on rum grant

April 12, 2010

Hon. Max Baucus
Chairman, Committee on Finance
United States Senate
Washington, DC 20510

Dear Chairman Baucus:

The U.S. Virgin Islands plans to give the world’s largest liquor company an estimated $2.6 billion in federal rum tax grants over 30 years to locate the company’s rum production in that territory. The USVI also wants to provide another multibillion dollar conglomerate a similar subsidy to expand its rum production in the islands.

By contrast, Puerto Rico only uses 6 percent of the rum tax grants it receives to assist its centuries-old rum industry and related jobs. Allegations that Puerto Rico supports the industry to a greater degree are blatantly false.

Attached are charts detailing Puerto Rico’s expenditures of the grants during territorial fiscal years 2006-2009 and an estimate for FY 2010. The data substantiates that assistance to the industry of $25 million a year averages only 6.1 percent of the federal rum tax grants (ranging from 5.5 percent to 6.6 percent.) This is a significant difference from the subsidy of more than 50 percent of the federal tax grants that the Virgin Islands has promised the company that would move from Puerto Rico.

USVI subsidies of more than the cost at which the rum is being sold would make it virtually impossible for Puerto Rican producers or companies in other segments of the industry to compete. In Puerto Rico, the excessive deals will surely lead to demands for comparable subsidies, and cost Puerto Rico’s budget hundreds of millions of dollars a year in new subsidies and/or lost federal rum tax grants.

Congress has generously given the Virgin Islands, like Puerto Rico, much of the federal tax on rum produced in the islands and in foreign countries to help pay for public services. Both territories should use the vast majority of the grant revenue for that purpose. Limiting the assistance that can be provided to companies to 10 percent of the grants would enable very generous support: Puerto Rican producers -- including the one that would move to the Virgin Islands -- have been profitable with less.

If Congress does not take action, Puerto Rico may be forced to take action and consider all options available to level the playing field to ultimately save its rum industry. Puerto Rico respectfully requests legislation, like H.R. 2122, that would provide a cap on the amount that companies can be given equal to but no greater than 10 percent of federal rum tax grants.

Sincerely,

Javier Vázquez Morales

Paul Pacult, that includes a numerical evaluation on a tasting grid, controlled-environment assessment, sample product enhancement, and exacting, up-to-the-minute tabulation arrived at through multi-stage blind judgings.
The Ultimate Beverage Challenge methodology reviews each product under ideal conditions over a period that allows the product ample time and opportunity to show its best characteristics and tendencies, or not. Multiple judges evaluate every entry in stages, building to a Finals Round per classification and category. In the final standings, the best products are by result of their aggregate scores and the judges’ consensus, eligible for maximum citation by the judges. Blind judging, which eliminates any chance of favoritism, is held over the course of a single period of several days to allow total focus for the judges."

Governor deJongh responds to Senator LeMieux's amendment to alter the rum excise tax cover-over program

March 4, 2010

LeMieux Proposal Transfers U.S. Virgin Islands’ Revenue to Puerto Rico Government

Statement from John P. deJongh, Jr., Governor, United States Virgin Islands

Senator LeMieux of Florida today ignored almost 100 years of federal precedent and clear Congressional intent by filing an amendment that drastically alters the rum excise tax cover-over program. His amendment would severely harm the economy of the U.S. Virgin Islands and overtly favors Puerto Rico.

Senator LeMieux’s amendment looks like it was developed alongside Puerto Rican lobbyists. The proposed amendment takes excise tax revenue paid by U.S. Virgin Islands rum makers on rum produced in the U.S. Virgin Islands and directly transfers it to Puerto Rico’s government coffers. Puerto Rico would end up with billions of dollars generated by rum production in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

As we search for solutions to the economic downturn, America needs smart, thoughtful leadership – not desperate attempts to pander to powerful special interests. Senator LeMieux is directly attacking his fellow Americans in the U.S. Virgin Islands by doing Puerto Rico’s bidding.

We are strengthening the U.S. Virgin Islands’ economy and stabilizing our government’s finances. The rum cover-over is a long-standing and successful economic development program that has provided benefits to the U.S. territories.

Furthermore, the rum cover-over program is of great economic and financial importance to the U.S. Virgin Islands. For the first time, we are making full use of these tools given to us, and we have done so without hurting any other location. I cannot understand why Puerto Rico and certain other interests are determined to hold back and undermine the economic interests and future of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Senator LeMieux’s plan could cause us to default on hundreds of millions of dollars in bonds, which would stop progress on infrastructure projects and environmental improvements, and would force the government of the U.S. Virgin Islands to the brink of receivership.

By promoting this amendment, Puerto Rico has not only given up any pretense of negotiating their concerns with the U.S. Virgin Islands as we have been asked to do by Congressional leaders, but Puerto Rico now also seems willing to walk away from the long history of friendship and collaboration which has linked America's two Caribbean possessions.

The title of the intimate French drama 35 Shots of Rum is so intriguing that anyone would long to understand its significance.
